It can feel like every day the media reports on new scams, identity theft and other fraudulent activity. Needless to say, superannuation is not immune to such activities. No doubt feelings of anxiety can arise, but there are a few small steps that you can take to help ensure that your accounts are well-guarded from these things.
How does identity theft happen?
Identity theft occurs when someone wrongfully obtains your personal information to carry out fraudulent activity, like accessing your superannuation account and attempting to make a withdrawal. Fraudsters are acting in many ways trying to get your attention and in turn access your details, some of which include:
- Targeted emails
- Intercepting your physical mail
- Password tracking
- Personalised calls or direct mail
- Advertisements (e.g. leaflets in mailbox, handouts on street)
At Christian Super, we are committed to helping you protect your super and we have secure measures in place to ensure your super is safe. However, there are simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of identity theft on your account.
The five foundational steps that you can take
1. Check your account regularly
The best thing that you can do is to ensure you’re checking your account and balance regularly. By checking your account, you’ll be able to view your statements and the activity which is occurring there. You’ll be able to see if money is being credited in, and also if money is being debited out.
2. Create secure passwords
You’ve probably heard this before, but ensuring that new and different passwords are generated for each online account you have is vital. Scammers are constantly on the lookout for similar passwords linked to online accounts.
When you’re creating a new password always make sure the account page is secure. You’ll know if a page is secure if there is a little lock arrow that situates itself in the browser. If it is not secure, we highly recommend extreme caution on the webpage and information you provide.
3. Beware of hoax emails
Keep your eye on emails that are sent to you which ask for personal details. These emails might say that Christian Super, a bank or government body are asking you to make changes to your account or can help you withdraw money. Clues that you can look for as to whether this is fraud include:
- Hyperlinks that link you to direct banking details or personal details
- Spelling mistakes
- Images that seem out of place
- Miscellaneous attachments
- Suspicious sender address and name
A helpful action: it’s also a good idea to install antivirus software onto your device, if you haven’t already done so. Antivirus software will help pick up fraud accounts.
4. Watch for unsolicited phone calls or SMS’s
If you receive an unwarranted phone call or SMS with the receiver claiming to be (or acting on behalf of) Christian Super, a bank or government body don’t provide any personal details. Take note of the name of the caller and the questions they ask.
If you receive a call and it directs you straight to a message bank, ensure that you do not leave any personal details.
If a received SMS has spelling mistakes or links embedded inside, do not click on them.

What we’re doing to protect your account
At Christian Super we are constantly watching for fraudulent activities that may be occurring. We are on guard making sure that all account changes and requests are done to the most secure of measures and that all of our staff are trained to identify fraudulent perpetuators. If we notice suspicious changes or account discrepancies that appear unsolicited, we will be in direct contact with you to verify this.
